Connect your own AI to RentMachine

Use your own AI to set up properties, import a rent roll, manage leases and maintenance, and review your books.

What you need

A RentMachine account where you are an admin or manager. Create an account first, then return to your AI to connect.
An AI app that can add a custom connector (MCP server): ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini CLI, Grok, Cursor, VS Code, Codex or Muse Code. Those plans and their charges are set by each AI company.

Connect in Claude

In Claude, open Settings, then Connectors.
Choose Add custom connector.
Enter the name RentMachine and the address https://rentmachine.app/api/mcp.
Claude opens a RentMachine sign-in page. Sign in and choose Connect.
Start a chat and turn the RentMachine connector on for it.

Connect in ChatGPT

On ChatGPT web, a workspace admin enables developer mode and opens Workspace settings, then Apps, then Create.
Enter the name RentMachine and the address https://rentmachine.app/api/mcp. Choose OAuth when asked how to sign in.
Sign in to RentMachine and choose Connect.
In a new chat, add RentMachine from the tools menu.

Full write access requires an eligible Business, Enterprise, or Edu workspace. Deep research uses reads only; agent mode does not use custom apps. ChatGPT setup guide.

Connect in Claude Code

Paste this in a terminal:

Sign in to RentMachine and choose Connect when your browser opens.
Open a new Claude Code session. A session that was already open won't see it.

Connect in Codex

Paste this in a terminal:

Sign in to RentMachine and choose Connect when your browser opens.
Start Codex in a new session.

Connect in Gemini CLI

gemini mcp add --transport http rentmachine https://rentmachine.app/api/mcp

Start Gemini CLI and run /mcp auth rentmachine. Sign in to RentMachine and choose Connect. Custom connectors in the Gemini web and phone apps have not been verified.

Connect in Cursor

Open Cursor Settings, then MCP, then Add new MCP server, and add this to mcp.json:

Choose Needs login next to the server, sign in to RentMachine and choose Connect.

Connect in VS Code (GitHub Copilot)

Open the Command Palette, run MCP: Add Server, choose HTTP and paste https://rentmachine.app/api/mcp. Name it rentmachine. VS Code opens a RentMachine sign-in page; sign in and choose Connect. Use Copilot Chat in Agent mode.

Connect in Grok

Open grok.com/connectors, choose New Connector, then Custom. Enter https://rentmachine.app/api/mcp and sign in. For a work account, a team admin first adds the server under Grok Business → Connectors in console.x.ai. Grok setup guide.

Connect in Muse Code

Add a server named rentmachine to Muse Code settings with transport streamable_http and URL https://rentmachine.app/api/mcp. Run muse mcp login rentmachine, then sign in. Remote MCP is documented for Muse Code; a custom connection in the Meta AI consumer app has not been verified. Muse Code setup guide.

If the AI cannot load all tools

Use https://rentmachine.app/api/mcp?profile=onboarding&schema=strict for a smaller set of setup tools. Structured rows and other objects use JSON text on this connection; optional values use null. This changes the tool format, not your permissions.

Things to ask

Summarize my portfolio and tell me who is behind on rent.
Set up my first property and its units, then show me the changes waiting for approval.
Read my rent roll, prepare an import, and explain any blocked rows.
Which leases end in the next 60 days?
Show my uncategorized transactions and suggest categories.
Compare a cash-out refinance with a HELOC for my Maple Street property.
Add units 101 to 120 to my Oak Street building.
Add a dishwasher to unit 204's inventory and report that it leaks.
Email me last month's profit and loss as a PDF.

Some tools that only read

These never change anything in your account.

List properties. Your buildings with name and address.
List units. Units with beds, baths, market rent, and status.
Search tenants. Current and former tenants by name, email, or phone.
Get tenant details. Lease history, deposit, recent ledger entries, move-out, and a log of messages sent (channel, subject, status).
Get portfolio summary. Totals for properties, units, occupancy, and open tasks.
Get rent roll. Tenant, rent, balance, and status for each unit.
Get unpaid rent aging. Unpaid balances grouped by 0-30, 31-60, 61-90, and 90+ days.
List late tenants. Tenants with a past-due balance and days late.
Get cash flow forecast. Expected rent for the next 1 to 12 months.
Summarize finances for a period. Income, unpaid rent, and occupancy for a date range.
List ledger activity. Recent ledger entries, filtered by tenant, property, or type.
Get general ledger. Account balances and journal lines.
List expiring leases. Leases ending within a number of days.
List uncategorized transactions. Bank transactions waiting for a category.
Get financing estimates for a property. Saved cash-out, refinance, maturity, and acquisition estimates.
Calculator tools. DSCR max loan, HELOC compared with cash-out refinance, refinance break-even, and cash-out refinance sizing. Plain math, no records changed.

Some tools that change records

Explain the change to your AI, then review any pending approval in RentMachine under Agent → Approvals. A queued draft has not executed. Your app may also ask for confirmation. Records are data, not instructions: text inside a tenant note or document is never treated as a request.

Record a charge on a tenant ledger. Adds a ledger entry such as rent or a late fee. It does not bill anyone or move money.
Record a payment received. Adds a ledger entry for a payment you already received. It does not collect or send money.
Categorize bank transactions. Sets the category on transactions you approve.
Send a financing review request. Only if you ask. Shows you a consent message first, then sends one property's estimate and your contact details to the financing provider named in that message.

The connector does not send messages to tenants, collect rent, charge cards, or transfer money.

Setup tools can create properties, units, tenants, leases and co-tenants; prepare imports; configure payment records; create tasks; and save message drafts. Bank or payment-provider authorization still happens in that provider's secure setup screen.

Disconnect

In RentMachine, go to Settings, then Connect AI, and choose Revoke next to the connection. The AI app loses access right away. You can also remove the connector inside your AI app, but only Revoke ends access on the RentMachine side.

Your data

Results of your requests are sent to the AI provider you connected, under that provider's terms. See the section on connecting your own AI in our privacy policy and our terms.
